Frequently asked questions
- What is EXIF metadata and why remove it?
- EXIF is a data block cameras and phones embed in every photo: GPS coordinates, date and time, camera model, and settings. Share an unstripped photo and anyone can read where and when it was taken. Stripping it before posting protects your home address, routines, and equipment details.
- Does removing metadata reduce image quality?
- No. The tool removes whole metadata segments and leaves the compressed image data untouched — there is no re-encoding and no quality loss. The cleaned file renders pixel-identical to the original, just a little smaller.
- Which formats and metadata types are supported?
- JPEG and PNG. For JPEG the tool removes EXIF (including GPS), XMP, IPTC/Photoshop blocks, and comment segments. For PNG it removes text chunks (tEXt, zTXt, iTXt), the eXIf chunk, and the tIME timestamp. Color profiles are kept so colors don't shift.
- Will my photo appear rotated after stripping?
- No. Phones often store portrait photos sideways plus an EXIF orientation flag. Deleting that flag naively makes photos display rotated, so this tool re-inserts a minimal orientation-only entry — the one EXIF value that is useful and harmless.
- Are my photos uploaded to a server?
- No. Reading, parsing, and stripping all happen in JavaScript in your browser tab. The photo never leaves your device, which also means it works offline once the page is loaded.
