Frequently asked questions
- How is word size decided?
- Word size is based on frequency: the more often a word appears in your text, the larger it's drawn. Sizes are scaled with a square-root curve so one extremely common word doesn't completely dwarf everything else.
- What are 'stop words' and why filter them?
- Stop words are common function words like 'the', 'and', 'is', and 'of' that appear constantly in any text but rarely tell you anything about the topic. Filtering them out (on by default) lets the actual subject matter dominate the cloud instead.
- Can two words overlap in the cloud?
- No. Each word is placed along a spiral search from the center outward until it finds a free spot that doesn't collide with an already-placed word. If the canvas fills up, the least frequent remaining words are simply left out rather than overlapping.
- Why does the layout change every time I regenerate?
- The placement search starts at a randomized angle, so re-running the same text produces a slightly different (but equally valid) arrangement. If you want to keep a specific layout, download it before making further edits.
- Can I use a word cloud made here commercially?
- Yes. The image is generated entirely on your device from text you provide, so there's no license restriction from this tool — just make sure you have the rights to the underlying text itself.
- Is my text uploaded anywhere?
- No. Everything — word counting, layout, and rendering — happens in your browser using JavaScript and the Canvas API. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
